Most demanded skilled personnel in the offshore/onshore oil and gas production platform

The oil and gas offshore/onshore production platforms often demand technically inclined professionals with outstanding skills, training and experience to man its facility. In an offshore/onshore production setting, various professionals ranging from painters, welders, operators, technicians, document controllers and engineers work together to see that production goals are achieved. In a typical oil and gas production platform there is often very high demand for hands on skilled personnel like the technicians, operators, artisans, etc, far more than any other trade. In fact, these group of workers make up over 80% of workers in the shore hence the list will be dominated by these set of workers.

The following list shows in order the most likely dominant trade you can find in any offshore /onshore production platform

Maintenance Personnel

Maintenance personnel tops the list.  Maintenance personnel are responsible for the repairs as well as routine and preventive maintenance of the oil and gas production facilities as well as the living quarters utilities of the accommodation areas. The maintenance team is made up of different unit ranging from instrumentation/controls, mechanical, electrical, HVAC, etc. Each maintenance unit is made up of mainly technician with supervisors heading each unit and onshore support Engineers providing necessary maintenance support from onshore. A minimum of ND or it equivalent is what qualifies one to work as maintenance technician in most offshore/onshore companies.

Instrument/controls personnel
Instrumentation and control professionals are currently the most demanded profession in a typical modern oil and gas production platform maintenance team hence they are often the largest personnel you can find on site within the team. As modern production facilities get increasingly automated so also the demand for automation professionals (Instrumentation, controls, safety controls, etc) increases.

Who’s qualified
Although personnel with Electrical/Electronic background dominate this field. Other engineering professionals or science personnel with appropriate training/certification and or experience can also fit in.

Mechanical system personnel

mechanical system professionals are the second largest group of personnel you can find in the maintenance team. production systems are mechanical in nature so frequent breakdown is always envisaged hence the high demand for mechanical technicians and their allied professionals. Besides, for efficient operation of those equipment the need for routine and preventive maintenance is inevitable. Compressors, Turbines, blowers, hydraulic systems, among others fall within the purview of mechanical professionals. In

Electrical System Personnel

This is often the second most sort after professionals in the oil and gas production facility. The fact that the production system utilizes electricity to power it machinery it becomes imperative that adequate personnel be available to ensure that power system is adequately maintained. pumps, compressors, blowers, HVAC, utilities, etc among others are parts of the equipment that is powered by electricity offshore. in fact, a typical offshore location may have an electrical power demand in excess of 20MW! (Can easily power a town). In a typical production site, they can have up to seven to eleven electrical personnel onboard.

Construction/fabrication personnel

These are usually the second most likely dominant group of personnel you can find on site in the shores. There job is usually physically challenging and they usually complement the maintenance team. In this group we have the Scaffolders, painters/blaster, riggers, rope access, welders, crane operators, forklift operators, etc.

Who is qualified
In most cases, minimum of O level certificate with relevant experience, training/certification can qualify one to work as any of the above stated trades.

Production Personnel

production personnel used to be the most dominant professionals in a typical oil and gas production facilities, after all they operate the production facilities. However, due to increasingly modernization and automation of the production system fewer and fewer operators are currently on demand. over 85% of the oil and gas production machinery runs autonomously with production operators merely monitoring the performance of the system hence you keep having less and less operators as production get even more automated.

Who is qualified
A minimum of ND (ND, HND, BSC, etc) in any of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering) courses is what is required to be considered.

Marine Personnel

These are personnel who are involved in all marine operations and logistics. They are usually in charge of the various vessels around the shore, the chemical supplies, the food supplies, the equipment supplies, boat landing and helicopter operations.

Who is qualified
In most cases minimum of O level certificate with relevant experience qualifies you.
